Dry Ice Blasting for Convection Sections
Removing the fouling that occurs within convection sections of petrochemical plant furnaces and boilers is a tricky undertaking.
Banks of finned tubes used for heat transfer within these sections are often layered in an offset pattern that makes them inaccessible to ordinary cleaning nozzles.
Letting buildup go unaddressed, however, is not an option. As fouling thickens, it reduces the efficiency of the heat transfer, which drives temperatures and costs up.
Some facility managers use chemical spray foam that coats the sections and then dissolves, but there’s a lot of manual cleanup involved. Others use abrasive blasting or hydroblasting, which are also messy and can leave behind a lot of water and collateral debris. These methods can also produce spotty results when dealing with offset tube banks that limit their reach.
Faster, More, Effective and Less Mess? We Had Them at “Alternative”
For all these reasons, managers of petrochemical plants and other facilities with gas-fired industrial furnaces generally don’t need a lot of convincing to try something different when they learn of a water-free, mess-free alternative for cleaning them.
Dry ice blasting is extremely effective at removing fouling from convection sections without any water or collateral debris, since the frozen CO2 pellets sublimate on contact. At Polar Clean, however, we’ve taken the process a step further with customized equipment that enables access to more surface area.
Dry ice blasting is also faster – a key consideration at petrochemical plants where shutdowns are planned well in advance and meticulously timed.
